Recording Reality is a Community Arts Project (CAP) that provides a platform for seniors to explore the filmmaking process and harness personal stories to produce their own documentary films.
In a workshop led by award-winning filmmaker Jasmine Ng, participants learnt about the basics of filmmaking and storytelling. Over the course of twelve sessions, participants developed a better understanding of the documentary genre and how it can be used to tell stories with impact. They learnt how to flesh out their ideas for their documentary films and picked up skills in camera handling and composition, interview techniques and the basics of editing a film.
Participants worked together in groups to create their own documentary films based on topics and personal stories that matter to them. Their films were edited into a short film by Jasmine Ng, and screened as part of Silver Films at Silver Arts in September 2015.
Recording Reality was commissioned by the National Arts Council from May to July 2015 as part of the Silver Arts initiative, which aims to celebrate arts and ageing.
